Each season has its little battles with clothes: In spring, deciding exactly when to switch from jeans to skirts (because everyone knows that once you go bare legged, you can’t go back); In summer, it’s trying to keep cool; In fall, it’s finding the balance between enjoying pumpkin spice and not revealing yourself to be overly basic. And in winter, it’s mastering the art of purchasing the perfect coat. The beauty of the coat challenge is that once you’ve found it, you probably won’t need to look again for a very long time. There’s just one catch in this… being that it’s nearly impossible to find it in the first place.
What am I looking for in a coat?
When looking for that perfect coat it can be very tricky. I mean, will it last me this winter and next? Will I be warm, stylish enough?
Material…
Looking for the perfect one there are a few things I would say to consider. The material, you do not want one made from cheap acrylic, you want one that will actually keep you warm in the snow (that’s if we’re lucky enough to get some) So go for the cheapest option might not be the best idea. You want to pay that little bit extra that will keep you all snug.
Space…
For when the weather really turns, having room for extra layers is defined. You don’t want to make the mistake that I made where it was really cold last year, I could either go out in my coat (which wasn’t very warm) or just layer up in knitwear which wasn’t waterproof! I learnt my lesson in buying coats, you NEED space for extra layers!
Pockets…
A coat without pockets is like Happy Hour without the discount. You might not hear me now, but no matter how perfect the coat is, without pockets, it is going to make you regret the day you bought it. You’ll be fighting your way through flurries of snow and have no place to tuck your hands.
Style…
You can probably get through December in an on-trend coat that’s only moderately warm. You can probably convince yourself that January is bearable, if you can just get through it. But by the time February rolls around the corner and it’s still close to zero, no fashion on earth is going to be worth how cold you are every time you leave the house. The idea is to find something stylish that’s also insanely warm, but when push comes to shove, NEVER sacrifice the potential for a little extra warmth for something that’s going to be out of fashion in another six months
